When I think of applying a base I always think of foundation first. If someone said to me a year ago that you could achieve a flawless base without foundation, I wouldn’t of believed them. Don’t get me wrong, foundations can achieve an amazing finish but you can also get a gorgeous base without it. There are a certain few products that I love for a no foundation base, so let me share them with you.

Prepping The Skin

I simply can’t do any base makeup without using prepping products. Of a morning, I generally cleanse my skin, tone with Pixi’s Glow Tonic and apply a lightweight serum such as Nip + Fab’s Dragon Blood Shot. This routine helps wake up my skin and improve my complexion. Then it’s straight onto primer and for this particular look I love my holy grail Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Blur Primer. This is perfect for blurring your pores and blemishes and is has a gel formula that hydrates the skin and gives a beautiful radiance. I use this one in particular as I find it works so well alone as well as with makeup for a luminous glow.

I love that concealers can offer so much versatility, from colour correcting to hiding blemishes and dark circles, so this particular product type is certainly what helps achieve a ‘no makeup’ looking base. My favourite concealer, which also works as a multi-tasker, is the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Concealer*. With such a great colour range the shade I have matches perfectly to my skin, which makes it so easy to wear without foundation. The shade I have (light neutral) is great for hiding dark circles and diminishing the appearance of blemishes and spots. This concealer range also has colour correcting fluids for any problems from redness to dark circles. As it says, this is weightless and lets your skin breathe. It blends out so well with a makeup sponge or even your figure, and if you get the right shade it becomes invisible to the eye but has medium coverage that is buildable. For a drugstore alternative I love the Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer, again this has a medium to buildable coverage but isn’t as invisible as the Urban Decay one. The Maybelline one also doesn’t come in colour correcting shades. Although, it does blend really well and both concealers have incredible longevity and they don’t crease at all when worn on their own.

Bronze and Glow

I can’t do a look without a bit of bronze and glow and these two steps are what really pull the look together. To add a sunkissed bronzed look I swear by MAC’s Gimme Sun Bronzer, the perfect shade to add an all over bronze look or even contour. This sits so well on bare skin as does the highlighters I love for this look. I generally use the Cover FX Drops, as they’re liquid and sit beautifully on the skin, if I opt for a powder highlight I use either the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits or Highlighter in So Hollywood, as they’re so finely milled and work so well with minimal makeup.

As I love the dewy look, I don’t tend to use powder very often when I wear a no foundation base, but if I do I tend to use a loose powder. Generally, I stick to my trust Nars Translucent Loose Powder which I dust over slightly to the areas I conceal. This is really lightweight and again is invisible to the eye. I find this helps the concealer last longer but if you want a fresher more dewy finish, I would say to leave the powder. As the last step in this routine I always use a setting spray, and for this I have a few favourites for this look. For a super dewy look I love the MAC Fix + or Pixi Glow Mist, for a matte finish I use the NYX Matte Finish spray and for a long lasting normal/dewy look I use the Urban Decay All Nighter. Although this look is minimal, a setting spray locks in the product and I can never do any makeup without a setting spray. They’re great to refresh your face with throughout the day.

Do you ever do a no foundation base?
