7 Common Signs Of Anemia

Anemia is more common than you might think. Many people lack sufficient red blood cells in their body and that can lead them to feel tired and easily fatigued when they exert themselves. 

There are many causes of anemia. These include vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, pregnancy and even some diseases that affect the bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma. 

You can tackle anemia in several ways. One is to improve your diet if a deficiency of a certain nutrient is the cause. For instance, eating more folate or using an iron supplement without constipation as a side effect can help. 

You might also want to go for a checkup to look for common causes of blood loss. For instance, stomach ulcers and heavy periods can induce anemia.

Here are some of the most common signs that you might have anemia, and what to do about it: 

Pale Skin

Some people have naturally pale skin, but if yours is looking particularly pale and you aren’t sure why it could be a sign of anemia. Paleness tends to emphasize darker skin around the eyes on the face. 

Blue Color In The Whites Of The Eyes

You may also notice a slight bluing of the whites of the eyes as the condition gets worse. This effect results from a lack of blood flow to the region which would normally keep them looking white or even slightly red in some people. 

Lightheadedness When You Stand 

Lightheadedness, when you stand up, is another common symptom of anemia. This may occur in combination with lower blood pressure. It may be difficult for your body to supply your brain with sufficient oxygen when you transition from sitting to standing positions. 

Problems Concentrating

The brain requires well-oxygenated blood cells to keep it powered. Without them, it can’t function. 

Anemia makes it more difficult for red blood cells to transport as much oxygen. As a consequence, the brain receives less fuel and this, in turn, means that it doesn’t function as well. It may be hard to concentrate on tasks in front of you. 

Shortness Of Breath

Muscles and other body tissues involved in exercise can also suffer. Shortness of breath is a common complaint among people with anemia. Even if they are a healthy weight, their blood cells can’t transport enough oxygen to their muscles to keep them supplied. This then leads to a lack of energy in the muscles, causing the lungs and heart to work much harder. 

Headaches

A lack of blood in the brain can also sometimes result in headaches. Chronic undernourishment means that your brain can’t get all of the oxygen it needs to thrive. 

Sore Tongue

You might also experience a sore tongue. In many cases, this occurs when iron levels fall below sustainable levels. In some cases, a sore tongue may be paired with mouth ulcers as the body finds it harder to supply tissues in the mouth with the nutrients they need.
