Start Your Day With a Signal

When you’re at home, it can be difficult to switch from relaxing mode to working mode. It can help to start your day with the same signal every day. This signal is meant for switching your brain into a working state.

It could be something as simple as making a cup of coffee or maybe you prefer to do some exercise. Taking the dog for a walk is a great way to start your day healthily and signal the start of work once you’re finished.

Separate Work Space

It’s important to have a space that’s dedicated solely to your work. If you don’t have a room you can use as an office, select a corner of space where you can put a desk. Working on the sofa or a bed can make it more difficult for you to switch into work mode.

Try to set something up near a window for light and fresh air when you need it. If you can raise your computer up a few levels while you work, you may feel more comfortable. You can do this by placing your computer on top of a few books.

Walk Away

It’s essential that you get up and take breaks. Even if it’s walking around your home and listening to some music for ten minutes, it can make a big difference. Sitting at a screen all day isn’t easy so walking away can help you to reset your focus.

If you’re finding it difficult to work on screen hour after hour, clear blue light glasses can help too. They’re designed to protect your eyes from the damage that staring at computer screens can do.

Stay Hydrated

Get into the habit of bringing a glass of water to your workspace each time you get up. Staying hydrated will not only help to keep you physically well but it will also help to keep your brain active and engaged in what you’re doing.

Be sure to eat and drink at regular intervals throughout the day rather than plough through your work without anything. It can help to work for 25 minutes and then take a 5 minute break.

Socialize

Working from home can be lonely so it’s good to remember to socialize with your colleagues. Talk to them on the phone, use Zoom to video chat, and meet up outside of work. There’s nothing like talking with someone face-to-face to make and sustain important connections.
